Meet & briefing
Agreed pickup near Ratnapura / Nivitigala or rendezvous point confirmed after booking. Quick safety and etiquette briefing: gems first, cameras respectful, listening to crews on site.
Traditional pit visit
Walk active or recently worked hand-mined shafts where pumps hum and baskets of gravel rise from depth. Pit entry is weather-dependent; heavy rain can pause underground access without notice. We adapt the route around conditions.
Excavator & mechanised workings
See how modern machinery strips topsoil, trenches gravel beds and feeds washing plants; your guide explains how mechanised recoveries complement centuries-old pit traditions. Stay behind marked lines and hearing protection where issued.
Hosted refreshments
Pause with food and drinks provided by Indunil Gems, a chance to reset before gemstones, questions and storytelling on neutral ground.
Curated viewing & sourcing conversation
At our workspace we unpack trays of colour (sapphire families, spinels, garnets and more) and translate rough clues into finished-jewellery thinking. Interested buyers receive transparent pointers on pricing mechanics; there is never obligation to purchase.

Know before you go
- Footwear & clothing: closed-toe shoes with grip, hat, sunscreen and a spare layer; the tropics swing from blazing sun to sudden showers.

- Safety: mining areas combine mud, heights and machinery noise; follow guide instructions at all times; judgement may pause segments if conditions deteriorate.
- Photography: allowed broadly but certain shafts or workshops may restrict flashes; respect crew wishes.
